Unlike standard passenger vehicles, a truck relies on compressed air to operate core components such as the braking system, clutch booster, differential lock, parking brake valve, and relay valves. The entire pneumatic system acts as the truck’s “lifeline,” and the air dryer cartridge serves as the system’s primary purification unit.
As the air compressor operates, it continuously draws in ambient air. The compression process generates significant amounts of impurities, including water vapor, dust, and oil residue. The cartridge’s core function is to filter and adsorb this moisture and these impurities, supplying dry, clean compressed air to the vehicle’s pneumatic components and preventing the accumulation of moisture and contaminants within the air lines.
In dry, sunny weather, low humidity results in a slower consumption rate of the desiccant inside the cartridge, extending its service life. However, during rainy or humid seasons, atmospheric moisture levels spike; the humid air drawn in by the compressor causes the desiccant to quickly become saturated with water.
Once the desiccant reaches full saturation and loses its adsorption capacity, the cartridge effectively becomes a useless “empty shell,” no longer capable of dehumidification or filtration. Unpurified, humid air entering the pneumatic system directly corrodes components, paving the way for future malfunctions and safety hazards.

Four Major Signs of Truck Air Dryer Cartridge Failure
Air dryer cartridge failure does not happen suddenly; the vehicle will provide clear warning signals beforehand. During daily operations or vehicle inspections, the appearance of any of the following symptoms indicates that the cartridge has failed and must be inspected and replaced immediately—do not attempt to continue using it.
(1) Excessive water accumulation in the air reservoir; incomplete drainage
This is the most obvious sign of cartridge failure. Under normal conditions, routine daily drainage releases only a small amount of water. However, when the cartridge fails, the air reservoir becomes flooded; even with daily drainage, the water discharged is excessive and dirty, and repeated attempts fail to clear it completely. This is a classic symptom of excessive moisture in the air system.
(2) Weak braking performance and increased stopping distance
Truck braking relies entirely on air system pressure. When significant moisture and impurities enter the air lines, they directly impede the transmission of braking force. The most noticeable effects are a “soft” brake pedal feel, sluggish braking response, and a significantly longer stopping distance.
Braking performance drops sharply—especially when driving heavily loaded at high speeds in the rain—causing the risk of accidents to skyrocket and making rear-end collisions highly likely.
(3) Air valves freeze and stick; vehicle prone to roadside breakdowns
During rainy seasons with large day-night temperature fluctuations, moisture remaining in relay valves, parking brake valves, and pipe joints can easily freeze in the cold night air.
Freezing causes valves to stick or jam; in severe cases, it can crack valve bodies or block air lines, leading to poor brake release, abnormal air pressure, or even a complete roadside breakdown that disrupts transport schedules.
(4) Slow air compressor output accompanied by abnormal noise and wear
Accumulated water and impurities in the air system continuously clog lines and valves, increasing the workload on the air compressor. Prolonged overloading leads to issues such as slower air buildup, weak output, and abnormal compressor noise.
Failure to replace the cartridge over an extended period subjects the compressor to continuous high-load wear, causing irreversible mechanical damage and resulting in extremely high repair costs.

Failure to replace the air dryer cartridge over an extended period leads to the accumulation of water and contaminants in the air system. Even more dangerous are malfunctions caused by accumulated moisture—such as brake sticking, locking up, or sudden failure—which can lead to catastrophic accidents when driving at high speeds with heavy loads; the consequences far outweigh any repair costs.
