Fuel saving is a core issue that truck drivers cannot avoid. In addition to the vehicle’s own performance, good driving habits can also save a considerable amount of fuel costs. Today, we will systematically sort out some effective fuel-saving techniques for you.
1. Optimize Engine Operating Conditions
Maintain the engine coolant temperature at around 90°C, as this maximizes thermal efficiency and minimizes fuel consumption. Avoid prolonged idling; if the engine is stopped for more than 5 minutes, it is recommended to turn it off. Under light loads, use higher gears and gentle throttle for smooth driving, minimizing engine overload.
2. Learn to Drive Anticipatorily
Driving skill often lies in the control of the accelerator and brakes. Experienced drivers skillfully use the accelerator to control speed and reduce unnecessary braking by anticipating situations and coasting. Driving in accordance with the situation not only makes driving smoother but is also key to saving fuel and protecting your vehicle.
3. Monitor Tire Condition
Both overinflation and underinflation increase rolling resistance, thus increasing fuel consumption. Tire pressure should be checked and calibrated regularly; it can be inflated slightly above the standard value by 5%-10%.
4. Keep windows closed at high speeds
When driving at high speeds, opening windows creates significant wind resistance, often increasing fuel consumption more than air conditioning. It is recommended to close windows and use air conditioning for ventilation when exceeding 80 km/h. At low speeds or in congested traffic, opening windows can be used to save energy.
5. Efficient Engine Warming-Up
In winter, there’s no need for prolonged idling to warm up the engine. This not only increases fuel consumption but also has limited effectiveness. The correct approach is to start the vehicle and drive smoothly at low speed for one or two kilometers, allowing the engine to gradually reach its optimal operating temperature dynamically. This saves fuel and is highly efficient.
Fuel saving is essentially a wisdom integrated into daily driving; it involves a deep understanding of vehicle performance and continuous optimization of driving habits. By incorporating scientific methods into every trip, you can reduce vehicle operating costs while achieving a more harmonious relationship with your vehicle.
